Sweater Care

At 525 America we’re all about the sweater and creating timeless classics. In order to keep our designs looking as brand new as the day you fell in love with them, we have the following guidance for caring for these personal favorites.

525 America has built a reputation for cozy, versatile cotton sweaters, but we also love to design with the latest innovations or the most sumptuous cashmeres and chenilles. Each comes with its own special ways to handle though. Check content label for composition. Is it one of our Signature designs in Rayon/Nylon or Cotton? Hand wash and lay flat to dry. If it’s our plush cashmere or wool, hand wash gently for best results and never throw in the dryer. The dryer is not a friend of cashmere or wool. Of course, we also include care instructions on each style, so make sure to review those as well.

Hand washing? Great! Make sure first to find a shampoo specifically made for wool and cashmere. Can’t find one? Baby Shampoo will cause no tears in this instance too! Add a small amount to a sink of warm water and soak for 15 minutes. Afterwards, rinse twice with cool water and gently press dry into sink or on a clean, dry towel to remove excess moisture — do not wring. Lay flat to dry to avoid stretching the yarns or misshaping the silhouette.

Want to refresh or add a touch more cozy to your sweater? After hand washing fill your sink with cool water and add a small amount of liquid fabric softener. Swirl until the entire garment is really saturated, then rinse with cool water. Gently press dry into sink or on a clean, dry towel to remove excess moisture — do not wring. Lay flat to dry to avoid stretching the yarns or misshaping the silhouette and then enjoy some extra comfy in your cotton.

BONUS: How Often Should I Wash?

Our sweaters are as resilient as they are chic. They do not need to be washed every time you wear them. In fact, they’ll grace through the years better if you wash them about every 3-4 wears. Of course, use your best judgement here. Did you go out dancing all night? Did you wear it to a bbq and spilled some mustard? You should wash it. But if it was just a normal day, let it air out.
